Scope note
Refers to the period from about 2650 to 2575 BCE in Egypt. Works of art include sculpture, reliefs, and wall painting. The architecture is distinguished by King Djoser's Step Pyramid at Saqqara. The period can be seen as a link between the formative period of the first two dynasties and the classic period of the Old Kingdom beginning in the Fourth Dynasty.
